ERNESTO LIVE ALBUM

In the 2011-2012 period, Kendra Steiner Editions organized and presented three concerts in Austin (four if you count the June 2012 Jandek concert we organized and co-produced), featuring (mostly) KSE recording artists and honored guests such as Greg Stuart and Rick Reed. For the third and final concert in April 2012, we were able to bring in the amazing ERNESTO DIAZ-INFANTE from San Francisco, in order to promote his KSE album EMILIO (KSE #206), one of our best-received and most widely reviewed releases, a tour-de-force collection of solo Bajo Sexto pieces.

Ernesto did one transcendent set, divided into two sections, at the concert: a suite of solo pieces in the vein of EMILIO,  and a trio performance with percussionist Lisa Cameron and bassist Lee Dockery, two of Austin’s finest forward-thinking musicians and both KSE recording artists. That complete show is now available on this new album ERNESTO DIAZ-INFANTE LIVE AT THE KSE 6TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT (KSE #255).

It’s a clean, rich live recording, which captures the depth and texture of Ernesto’s amazing solo bajo sexto explorations. Hard to believe this is just ONE musician on an acoustic instrument!  I grew up on the forward-thinking  guitar albums of Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, Hans Reichel, Sonny Sharrock, Jean-Francois Pauvros, and with Bajo Sexto being such an important part of Mexican and Mexican-American music (both here in Texas and in Ernesto’s home state of California), I am very excited about sharing this important, pioneering work with as large an audience as I can. NO ONE ELSE is doing work like this.

Ernesto Diaz-Infante received his MFA in Music Composition from California Institute of the Arts and has created musical compositions that span a broad perspective: transcendental pianonoiseavant-garde guitar, field recordingslo-fi four-track manipulations, and experimental songED-I has performed throughout Europe and the United States, and his music has been broadcasted internationally. He has recorded more than 15 CDs of music and collaborated with numerous musicans. In 2000, his composition, I/O (for chamber ensemble), was performed by the California EAR Unit. He has been awarded residencies at the Centre International de Recherche Musicale (CIRM) in Nice, France, The Millay Colony for the ArtsVilla MontalvoThe Ucross Foundation, among others. He runs Pax Recordings record label which is dedicated to the documentation, preservation, and contagion of music from the margins of our culture and psyches. He lives in San Francisco with the filmmaker/video artist Marjorie Sturm and their son and daughter.

It was a pleasure to meet and work with Ernesto on this concert. He is truly a gentleman, and his presence in the Austin/San Antonio area created quite a buzz.

KSE commissioned an original cover painting from Austin artist CARL SMITH for this album—-Carl listened to the album a number of times and created a work that captures the dynamics of trio identities and of group unity beautifully, in his signature dynamic style (Carl also did a cover for our most recent poetry chapbook from Michael Layne Heath). You can see more of Carl’s work at http://carlsmith29.wix.com/arts

This is a stunning album: one half cutting-edge solo bajo sexto explorations a la EMILIO, and one-half higher-key exploratory trio work with Lisa Cameron and Lee Dockery….order your copy now
