poem: Lonely Road (from ENVY)

Filed under: Uncategorized — kendrasteinereditions @ 4:45 pm

My late brother-in-law Bob fought a brave battle against cancer until his passing two years ago. His strength and humor and wisdom inspired this piece from ENVY (now available as a reprint, by the way!):

————————————————————————————

LONELY ROAD

     He did not go

               suddenly

          he’d said his

               goodbyes

          he’d kept his

               wit

          he’d had no

               quarrels

                    to settle

     He’d prepared himself

          by getting accustomed to

               no food,

                             then

               no water,

                              then

               no speech,

                                then

               no sight,

                              then

               no pulse,

                              then

like a child

      who’d been lost

          during a school outing

                to a petting zoo

he’d rejoined the group

     and they no longer

                worried

and they went

             back          home
