KSE #129,   MIRA HORVICH / BILL  SHUTESUSPENSION.          Now available!

The first in a series of half poetry-half photography chapbooks KSE will issue in 2009, SUSPENSION began with the image of mobiles in suspension. With that as our creative seed…Polish poet, fiction writer, and visual artist Mira Horvich created a haunting series of wind-chime photographs,  and I created a series of wind-chime rooted poems. The result is SUSPENSION.

The four poems are each based on a metal used in wind chimes–brass, pewter, aluminum, and copper–and each poem uses Mira’s corresponding photo as a prompt for a phantom poetic narrative growing out of the visual image. “Brass” captures a woman, longing for retirement,  surrounded by annoying people at a racetrack  ; “Pewter” grows out of shadows, tobacco smoke, and sirens; “Aluminum” is set in a sanitized plastic yuppie “ranchette” outside San Antonio; and “Copper” captures the last days of a Kansas singer-songwriter, composing his final songs on a  Sears Harmony 12-string guitar as the incense burns and the dogs waits to be walked.

More of Mira’s work graces the front and back cover, and the poetic epigraph this time is from George Oppen:

how shall I light

the room that measures years.

Hand-numbered edition of 58 copies. Act now!
