Bill Shute album liner notes/Inner Mystique Records

I was recently asked about album liner notes I wrote back in the 80s/90s. I’m sure there are others out there (maybe some 7″ EP’s also), but there are three I distinctly remember, so here they are in no particular order, all vinyl LP’s:

THE DOWNLINERS SECT, “Live in the 80’s” (Garageland Records, Sweden)

THE HOODS, “Gangsters & Morticians” (Midnight Records, USA)

THE KENNE HIGHLAND CLAN, “He’s Five Beers Ahead of Your Time” (Stanton Park Records, USA)

—————————————————————————–

Also, there were  three releases on my Inner Mystique Record label that actually came out:

INNER MYSTIQUE #3 , seven-inch various artists EP featuring Rocket From The Tombs, The Lipstick Killers, Billy Synth, etc.

DOWNLINERS SECT, 45 rpm single, “Colour-Coded Red” b/w “You Ain’t Doin’ Me Right”

PETER LAUGHNER, “Cinderella Backstreet” 7″ EP, released in collaboration with Forced Exposure

in addition to those, Kim Fowley generously agreed to do an EP for Inner Mystique, but I was unable to raise the money or get that together. That would have been a coup for the label and for me personally, so I’m sorry I was unable to do it. Every Fowley release is a gem, and I regret not being able to add another one to the world. If I had the money, I’d be willing to start a new label exclusively devoted to Kim Fowley releases, both new and archival material.

also, negotiations were in the works to do an EP of then-unreleased Bobby Fuller tracks as a pressing for the Bobby Fuller Fan Club, but that never happened.

AND of course there was going to be a 7″ EP of unreleased material from Sky Sunlight Saxon, music recorded in the late 70s and early 80s, and Sky and I both really wanted that to come out, but he was unable to get a master tape and I was in the middle of getting married and moving and finding work, so I was unable to raise the money…I moved on (from Oklahoma to Virginia), Sky moved on (from Hawaii to California), and though we kept in touch, that release also never happened. I’d also spoken to Fred and Toody Cole (Rats/Dead Moon) about doing a release, but beyond some initial talk, I was never able to follow up on that.

I’m probably forgetting some details…the 1980s seems like a few lifetimes ago, and in many ways IT WAS…

If anyone cares, some other time I can try to remember some details about the old INNER MYSTIQUE zine…

“Overcome” (KSE #141) by Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal & Cynthia Etheridge, now available

Filed under: Uncategorized — kendrasteinereditions @ 6:35 pm

KSE  #141

overcome

OVERCOME

Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal and Cynthia Etheridge

The latest entry in our poetry-photography series teams Los Angeles poet Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal with Atlanta/Asheville visual artist Cynthia Etheridge for a haunting excursion into a parallel world where the pieces of the puzzle have been put together differently and the familiar seems foreign. Luis is a poet of great range and lyricism, as can be seen in his FIVE previous KSE chapbooks and his two books, RAW MATERIALS and BEFORE & WELL AFTER MIDNIGHT. In his new OVERCOME we have a series of narrators attempting to make sense of the pieces of experience they encounter, but the skies, the roses, the fields, the dogs, and the stones do not “behave” in the expected manner, and these poetic meditations manage to be both life-affirming and puzzling and disquieting…as if Cervantes met Kafka: “We are all on our own / holding a grudge against / the world, fragile as a mirror.”

Complementing Luis’  nine poems in this suite are seven photographs by noted Southern visual artist Cynthia Etheridge, who did the front and back cover portraits for Christopher Cunningham’s IN GAMBLER’S BLOOD (KSE #69), and who is currently working out of Asheville, NC. You can see some samples of her work at her blog, http://cynthiaetheridge.blogspot.com/ . However, the b&w portraits here—-images from both the natural world and the abandoned “things” of civilization now reclaimed by that natural world—-show a new side of Cynthia’s art and were composed especially for this project. I hope to include more of Cynthia’s work in future KSE chaps.

Luis and Cynthia take you on a trip inside the otherside in this chapbook—-like all KSE offerings, small in size but potent in content and capable of multiple re-readings…now and years from now. Are we overcome or will we overcome? Read and decide…

ANTIQUEWHITE RAIN (sound library series, volume 45)

by     A. J.  Kaufmann

Now that he’s back in Poland, re-emerged from the underground, and returned from his travels in Germany, France, and Morocco,   A. J. Kaufmann has been on fire. We at KSE want to do our part to capture and document this poetic energy-burst, so we’re proud to present, outside the regular release schedule, the 45th entry in the Sound Library Series, ANTIQUEWHITE RAIN (KSE #139), inspired by German rocker Inga Rumpf’s 1975 album Second-Hand Mädchen (Inga Rumpf may be best-known to Americans as vocalist-guitarist with the early 70’s band Frumpy).

10 new poems. Nightmarish German Ages collide with primal rhythms while a sharp-toothed Antiquewhite second-hand Berlin mädchen plays with her Kiwi eyelids, summer passes, the jokers wait outside, and we all continue the search for Ray Charles’ America.

ANTIQUEWHITE RAIN by A. J. Kaufmann…it’s exactly what you think it is, except higher proof and higher velocity.
