Bill Shute album liner notes/Inner Mystique Records

Filed under: Uncategorized — kendrasteinereditions @ 10:25 am

I was recently asked about album liner notes I wrote back in the 80s/90s. I’m sure there are others out there (maybe some 7″ EP’s also), but there are three I distinctly remember, so here they are in no particular order, all vinyl LP’s:

THE DOWNLINERS SECT, “Live in the 80’s” (Garageland Records, Sweden)

THE HOODS, “Gangsters & Morticians” (Midnight Records, USA)

THE KENNE HIGHLAND CLAN, “He’s Five Beers Ahead of Your Time” (Stanton Park Records, USA)

Also, there were  three releases on my Inner Mystique Record label that actually came out:

INNER MYSTIQUE #3 , seven-inch various artists EP featuring Rocket From The Tombs, The Lipstick Killers, Billy Synth, etc.

DOWNLINERS SECT, 45 rpm single, “Colour-Coded Red” b/w “You Ain’t Doin’ Me Right”

PETER LAUGHNER, “Cinderella Backstreet” 7″ EP, released in collaboration with Forced Exposure

in addition to those, Kim Fowley generously agreed to do an EP for Inner Mystique, but I was unable to raise the money or get that together. That would have been a coup for the label and for me personally, so I’m sorry I was unable to do it. Every Fowley release is a gem, and I regret not being able to add another one to the world. If I had the money, I’d be willing to start a new label exclusively devoted to Kim Fowley releases, both new and archival material.

also, negotiations were in the works to do an EP of then-unreleased Bobby Fuller tracks as a pressing for the Bobby Fuller Fan Club, but that never happened.

AND of course there was going to be a 7″ EP of unreleased material from Sky Sunlight Saxon, music recorded in the late 70s and early 80s, and Sky and I both really wanted that to come out, but he was unable to get a master tape and I was in the middle of getting married and moving and finding work, so I was unable to raise the money…I moved on (from Oklahoma to Virginia), Sky moved on (from Hawaii to California), and though we kept in touch, that release also never happened. I’d also spoken to Fred and Toody Cole (Rats/Dead Moon) about doing a release, but beyond some initial talk, I was never able to follow up on that.

I’m probably forgetting some details…the 1980s seems like a few lifetimes ago, and in many ways IT WAS…

If anyone cares, some other time I can try to remember some details about the old INNER MYSTIQUE zine…

  1. Hey Bill

This is great, thanks for doing it, never did track down that Mystique #3 EP – you *know* I would love to see a complete Inner Mystique rundown with scans etc – go for it!
