KSE #160

“This Moment, Reflected In Ice”

now available

hand-numbered, hand-assembled edition of 71 copies

John Sweet is one of our most essential contemporary poets, writing in a lean and lyrical style that is always bubbling under with the threat of violence and the fear of nothingness. Beautifully crafted miniatures, Mr. Sweet’s poems are spring-loaded and ready to snap at any moment. He is the topographer of the violence that runs like an underground stream below the surface of daily life: the threat in the eyes of the abusive parent, the manipulative boyfriend, the corrupt clergyman, the knife-you-in-the-back yet gladhanding hypocrite. But we will struggle and we will fight and we will not allow ourselves to be beaten down. Sweet’s poetry has never been more needed or more relevant.

John Sweet has been producing his tense yet understated poetry for 15+ years, never associating himself with any clique, never schmoozing with or ass-kissing the self-appointed powers-that-be in the alternative poetry world. Like a Paul Weller or a John Ford or a Sonny Rollins, he just does the work , and it speaks for itself…powerfully. John had one previous KSE chap, the much-acclaimed NEXT EXIT: NINE (KSE # 112) , which he shared with MK Chavez, but this is his first solo chapbook for KSE…and we hope it will not be his last. I’ve respected Mr. Sweet and his work for a long time. He’s just what’s needed in this poetry world full of bullsh*t artists and pretentious posers. He’s got the old school writing discipline of a Hemingway or a Richard Wright and the understatement of a Cid Corman. He’s an American original, and you need THIS MOMENT, REFLECTED IN ICE.

John has many other fine books of poetry, some of which you can still find. Among them, HUMAN LANDSCAPES, which is stocked by Amazon at

He also has a number of powerful collections available from Wall of Noise Press and Severed Tongue Press including CHRIST THE DESTROYER, BETWEEN TRUTH AND MERCY, and GIVE A POOR MAN GOD AND WATCH HIM STARVE. Check them out!
