Many Austin musicians work in multiple groups, not to mention one-off hookups for special occasions. I’d been a fan of both Eva Kelly (a multi-instrumentalist who often uses the guitar and electronics) and Andy Hendrix (another multi-instrumentalist who often uses stringed instruments such as cello and bass as well as electronics) for some time when I saw their duo UNMOOR at the Slow Pump Dronefest in March 2011. They were one of the acts playing the smaller stage near the bar, which with a few exceptions (Rachel and Grant Evans’ Quiet Evenings being the major one, along with Zanzibar Snails, both awesome), had better acts than the main stage. With a set up of guitar, cello, bass, tapes, and various electronics, they created rich, dense, and cinematic soundscapes with a jagged edge and with fascinating textures…and did this on a “stage” that was as big as the average breakfast table. Immediately after the show, I chatted with Andy and Eva…had not gotten to speak with them before…and invited them to do an album for KSE. They worked slowly on the album step by step, and after about a year they produced NIGHT DRIVER,  a stunning collection of moderate-length pieces that weave strings, guitar, bass, tapes, found sounds and voices, feedback, electronics, and much more into a fascinating sound stew that takes the listener to vividly drawn imaginary places, where the clocks melt and children’s voices are heard behind unseen walls—sounds filtered through an out-of-range AM radio,  a managed chaos.

Andy Hendrix has been performing with his Skwaarmalar Sound Machine since 2009 and recently released a superb split CDR on Gilded Throne with BelltoneSuicide (aka Michael Barrett), while Eva Kelly regularly plays as Sprills of Ore, and KSE has plans to release a Sprills of Ore album in early 2013.

This is a drone-ambient-noise-psychedelic album with a lot of compositional craft to it, an album that still fascinates and excites me after two dozen plays, which is not surprising, as Andy and Eva are two of Austin’s most interesting musicians, so we are fortunate that they work the Unmoor duo into their busy schedules. This should be available at some stores around Austin, but it’s only $8 in the US if you want to order it direct from KSE. $8 via paypal to django5722(at)yahoo(dot)com…add $2 for postage if outside the US and ordering only one item.

All of our releases are hand-assembled, hand-numbered DIY artifacts of under 125 copies, and with the variations in cover stock and inks, no more than 5 copies of any one release will have the same combination, probably fewer than 5. Our releases may eventually find their way to either Volcanic Tongue or Feeding Tube, but we do not distribute through the established “alternative” or “underground” distributors. So it’s easiest to get the music cheaply and quickly direct from KSE…only $8 in the US.

Thanks for your support of independent micro-labels and micro-presses such as KSE…
