KSE is ALWAYS interested in presenting new work from those exploring the untapped possibilities of stringed instruments in the guitar and banjo family (check out our two albums from Bajo Sexto player Ernesto Diaz-Infante for  mind-bending proof of that! also, the out-of-print album from steel guitar shaman Heather Leigh), so we are VERY excited to present to you WIRED LOVE (KSE #260), a series of guitar and banjo explorations from Western Massachusetts musician-composer-theorist TOM CREAN.

I’d first heard of Tom through his work with Anthony Braxton, with whom he had the honor of studying. I then picked up on his “Guitar Journal” podcasts  (check them out at http://tomcreanguitarjournal.com/ ), which he’s been doing now for 10 years!. Like a Derek Bailey or a Sonny Sharrock or a Fred Frith or a Hans Reichel or a Loren Connors , TOM CREAN has created his own guitar vocabulary and syntax, and he’s able to do an amazing diversity of work within this world he’s created—-on the surface, some of his works might be pigeon-holed as splatter-guitar or free-jazz or minimalist or conceptual or freak-folk or progressive-acoustic or post-modern Americana. However, his work on this album is rooted in a composing/performing technique he calls “transcription.” This has nothing to do w/ the old “transcription discs” of the 1930’s and 40’s used in radio broadcasting; nor does it refer to the transcription of music from a recorded format onto paper so it can be performed by others (we’ve all heard about people who “transcribe” Charlie Parker or Jimi Hendrix or Bix Beiderbecke solos).

As I understand the ‘Transcription’ process, it involves taking materials from “popular and ‘non-art’ musics” and  re-building new compositions and/or bases for improvisation from these elements, reclaiming these elements and re-contextualizing them with humor and spontaneity. At my request, Mr. Crean has not identified the kernels from which the new pieces were developed, but on at least two of the pieces a flash of recognition may come through… In any event, these are all newly composed pieces, and new interpretations of those new compositions at that. Tom Crean’s partner in these transcriptions has been Matt Robidoux, and we tip the hat to Matt for his contributions to this exciting album. Don’t worry about the conceptual bases of this music: it’s forward-thinking guitar and banjo pieces that range from beautifully lyrical to rough and jagged to trippy to old-timey, and the initial reactions we’ve gotten have been amazing. KSE commissioned this album from Mr. Crean, and with his busy schedule, we’re glad we pinned him down. He plays regularly in Western Massachusetts in many different combinations and is much in demand as a teacher.
