that eccentric rag cover

When I travel (to Louisiana, to New England, to New Mexico, wherever), I always try to soak up as much of the local texture and culture as possible, and I usually take that raw material and that fresh environment and assemble poetry from the sounds and smells and details and concrete surface reality of the area. In late July 2013, I was able to do that while visiting the greater Pittsburgh area, ranging from Hermitage PA to the north and Wheeling WVA to the southwest. This was my 4th trip to Pittsburgh in the last 10 years, and it’s one of my favorite cities for many reasons. It seemed like the perfect place to create another poetic cluster of images and perspectives and situations and voices and flotsam and jetsam and fictionalized-but-likely experiences. In other words, another Bill Shute poetry chapbook.

Blinded before sunrise in a sea of camouflage…the money’s good for those collecting tolls, those servicing the permanent war, & those connecting us to the cloud……………planting fear in strangers, for a profit……………lost individuals bump into each other and grab for a brass ring that was stolen months ago and sold for scrap………aces in the hole, melting the ice until we fall through………if you accept the job, you accept the marching orders………… With pierogies and a bottle of Yuengling on the side. As claimed in an ad for a lowbrow wrestling movie back in the 1980’s, “it’s disgustingly real.”  Unpolished, jagged clusters of energy, literary junk sculpture from the new gilded age….composed in the belly of the beast that was the original Gilded Age, but now one of the most livable American cities….PITTSBURGH.

THAT ECCENTRIC RAG.   Hand-assembled, imperfectly-cut edition of 49 copies. Get yours now. Read it, so you won’t have to live it…

SPRILLS OF ORE

We really believe in the work of Austin multi-instrumentalist and composer EVA KELLY here at KSE…I first made her acquaintance a few years ago at a drone festival in Austin when she was playing with Andy Hendrix as UNMOOR. With a combination of live electronics and tapes and traditional instruments played in an unconventional manner, UNMOOR proved themselves to be sound sculptors of the highest order, and that same night I invited them to do an album for KSE, which they did and which you need (see below—you can still get one). I then had the privilege of working with Eva myself alongside her husband Daniel Hipolito (Smokey Emery, Lumens) with a poetry-and-electronic music performance at the KSE 6th Anniversary Concert, and seeing and feeling her imagination and creativity and inventive spirit first-hand, I invited her to do a solo album for KSE in her identity as SPRILLS OF ORE….and TIME MIRRORS is that album.

With so much interchangeable drone/noise/ambient music on the market and on the internet today, TIME MIRRORS stands out and galvanizes the listener: it’s got melting feedback and electronics rooted in submerged song-forms that may echo the Jesus and Mary Chain or the Spacemen 3 at one moment but then it bleeds into cavernous sound-structures that always are full of interesting compositional touches but still leave room to breathe. Each of the 9 tracks has a different atmosphere, and it’s as if you are watching a series of 9 short experimental films on a similar theme by different filmmakers. Ms. Kelly also uses her voice as an instrument in the mix, adding a bit of zest to the mix. If you have enjoyed KSE’s previous albums by Derek Rogers or Parashi or Rambutan, you will LOVE this album…although Eva Kelly is not really like anyone else working today. I hear a tinge of the art-school side of punk (think Wire or Alternative TV) but distilled through 30 years of musical advancement, but it should be emphasized that although Ms. Kelly has an exciting and rich sense of post-song composition, this is an album of sound sculpture, not an album of post-rock or whatever. And it’s one of the best I’ve heard in years…

It is the perfect album to put on at 2 a.m. in darkness and travel with….it’s also a perfect album to wake up to in the morning…it’s got elements of a European sensibility but with both feet in working-class Texas.

It’s an album I always hoped would exist…and SPRILLS OF ORE have brought it to life in full multi-dimensional sound, mastered by Andy Hendrix (Eva’s partner in UNMOOR, whose KSE album you can still get). With this kind of music time becomes irrelevant…Eva Kelly wisely keeps the tracks relatively short, but long enough to extend and flow and rise and build and release tension…with each track, it’s as if you are looking onto miles of huge delta expanse in front of you with the night-sky lit up and an aromatic taste in the air and our feet planted in oozing mentholated silt…it’s the sound of lovemaking and sunsets and feedback and creation and afterglow…it all resolves yet it leaves you wanting more…it’s SPRILLS OF ORE, from Austin’s EVA KELLY.  Limited edition of 123 copies on CDR…get yours now…
