CATHAL RODGERS_20140117_0001

Irish multi-instrumentalist and composer CATHAL RODGERS has been issuing a lot of fine music in recent years, much of it using feedback and distortion the way an artisan glassmaker blows glass into various shapes and forms. His 4-cassette album WHO AND WHAT WE ARE, done under the name WEREJU, was KSE’s choice for best album of 2010, and it’s a collection of drone-based sound paintings that never gets old and always offers up new riches. We invited Mr. Rodgers to create a new work for KSE—-he’d heard a number of our albums and had a good sense of what the label represents—and the result is a unique creation, not really like any other Rodgers/Wereju album and unlike anything else KSE has had on offer. Inspired by the work of Cathal’s  fellow Irishman Samuel Beckett, INSTRUMENTAL CONDITIONING (KSE #268) is a suite of astringent yet beautiful pieces tasting of aluminum and dank cellars, taking the listener to realms beyond the midnight horizon, juxtaposing drone and feedback sculptures with solo bass and guitar explorations, creating a multi-textured and diverse collection. Part of my background is Irish (two of my aunts were born there), so I know that Irish life can be both incredibly rich and mercilessly brutal. Cathal’s work mirrors that dichotomy, which somehow gets welded together into a distinctive unity in the album INSTRUMENTAL CONDITIONING.  If KSE listeners need a comparison with a previous release, I’d say that this album is to Ireland what Brent Fariss’s  “Four Environments…Collapsing” was to Central Texas. This is the perfect album to play before sun-up on a cold and rainy day—-you can feel a new life-form emerging from the bog and smell the peat as time stands still and everything revolves, yet with the new day we will emerge once again and we will endure. A totally unexpected yet very welcome album from Cathal that KSE is  proud to present. The sparse guitar/bass pieces peppered throughout the album almost function like spells of coming up for air in between deep-sea diving into dark and cavernous trenches. Don’t miss INSTRUMENTAL CONDITIONING….limited, hand-assembled, hand-numbered edition of 123 copies….
