blues with a bridge

KSE has issued a number of poetry-and-art chapbooks over the years, where the poet and the visual artist dialogue on the page. This one grew out of my enthusiasm for the ink-blot artworks of David Payne (from Hamilton, Ontario, best-known as half of experimental music duo Fossils). David produced a number of postcard-sized works using various colors of ink, but eventually limited his focus to black ink and studies in dilution and absorption and controlled bleeding. These works had an austere beauty and also resembled the kind of infinitely unique images found in tree trunks or oil floating in water.

We came up with a theme for this joint work, and then David created a suite of small rectangular black-ink  works, and I cannibalized and re-contextualized some 2007 lines and stanzas containing claustrophobic images of abandoned basements and storage areas inspired by my 1980’s work as a security guard and as a maintenance person and jack-of-all-trades at an old church in Virginia (with Greek-chorus commentary from old dog-racing programs). The two of us shot our arrows at the same target—-and the result is BLUES WITH A BRIDGE, an attractive 10-page hand-assembled, hand-cut, hand-numbered poetry-and-art chapbook in a limited edition of 73 copies. Get yours now…before they’re gone. It will take you to places you’ve never been…and remind you of places you’ve tried to forget, both internal and external.

Shut the door, they’re coming through the window!
