As longtime KSE readers know, we’ve published a lot of poetry inspired by music. The Sound Library Series is up to 77 volumes now, but in addition to that, we’ve had a few other series. In the early days of KSE, there was the 10-volume Creel Pone Sound Study series, and I’ve also been issuing here and there releases in the Ducal Poems series, those being inspired by the music of Duke Ellington (and there will be further Ducal chapbooks coming). Now, we are introducing a new series: CASSETTE POEMS. These are inspired by deep listening to cassette-only albums of experimental/drone/noise music. Many fine cassette albums have come and gone, often in editions of a few dozen, and unless they get reissued as downloads on Soundcloud or Bandcamp (which they often do), only the original purchasers or future collectors will get to appreciate these important works. The Cassette Poems series is initially scheduled for FIVE poetry and photography chapbooks over the next year, and I’m proud to announce that the first release is inspired by an old 2010 album from a great Texan, DEREK ROGERS…..the album being ACTIVE PARTICIPANT, released by the always-fine Ghetto Naturalist Series. While in Mobile, Alabama, recently, I had this tape in my old Walkman often, and it carried me away to where I created the situation/setting/narrative/images found in this chapbook. The photos come from Pensacola, Florida. It’s a four-page poem with a character involved in personal rebuilding after a prison term, set on the Gulf Coast. The photos help to create the “world” in which the poem is set. As always, I hope you find it interesting and worthwhile. It’s not necessary to have heard the tapes on which these releases are based—-they are stand-alone creations.
As always, I hope you find this work to be interesting and worthwhile. I was going through a kind of lifestyle change when I wrote it, and as that involved some personal re-invention, I found myself going back to a less collage-oriented and more narrative style with this piece, so regular readers might find it something of a change of pace….or not!
