ERNESTO TUNNELS

During the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, 32 Palestinian tunnels, 14 of which went into Israel, were found. I was struck by the subterranean horror of these tunnels, along with the desperation their creation represented. I also was unnerved by the military tactic of random surprise kidnappings. It all seemed something out of a nightmare. My piece “Tunnels” is an offering, a mantra of peace, and a quest for light in the darkness of this political landscape. My intention was to create a calmative and ruminative strumming that would help give faith in the process of life.–ERNESTO DIAZ-INFANTE (April 2016)

As someone who grew up wrapping my mind around the guitar albums of Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Jean-Francois Pauvros, Hans Reichel, Sonny Sharrock, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Robbie Basho, etc., I have always treasured albums by those intrepid explorers who chart new territory on guitar/banjo/bajo sexto, etc. Therefore, it’s been exciting for KSE to have an ongoing relationship with West Coast composer and guitar visionary ERNESTO DIAZ-INFANTE. He’s recorded a number of albums for KSE, both solo and with folks such as Lisa Cameron and Lee Dockery, and he had the pivotal lead-off track on the KSE 10th Anniversary album, a virtuoso six-minute splatter guitar piece, which served as an entryway into an album full of heavy-hitters such as Alfred 23 Harth, Sarah Hennies, Matt Krefting, Vanessa Rossetto, and Graham Lambkin. He also was the headlining artist at the KSE 6th Anniversary event in Austin.

TUNNELS presents a new and unique application of the “mantra strumming” guitar technique Ernesto has presented on previous albums such as Civilian Life and Wistful Entrance, Wistful Exit. Just imagine a sound version of the slow flow of thick water on a Louisiana bayou, pulsating under the surface and creating ever-changing circles, pulling down different random reeds with each pulsation, the previously knocked-down ones gradually pulling themselves back up, with occasional leaves and twigs and debris adding texture-in-motion to the scene, a scene where the form is ever-becoming. This 43-minute piece has a similar kind of slowly pulsating, ever-changing FLOW, and the chiming sweet-and-sour tone and rich harmonies of a 12-string guitar add yet more depth and complexity to the sound canvas.

In his statement about the album, Ernesto wrote, “My intention was to create a calmative and ruminative strumming that would help give faith in the process of life.” He certainly achieved THAT to the n-th degree on TUNNELS. If I were you, I’d put this on after midnight, pour out an ounce of complex Islay scotch, open the windows, and put TUNNELS on repeat….let it mix with the outside environment and the smoky peaty taste of the scotch. The tyranny of time will evaporate and the album can serve as the catalyst for a truly transcendent experience….there may be a heck of a lot wrong with the world, but an album such as TUNNELS reminds me that there are artists out there who have tapped into a higher-key, both elevating and primal.

Don’t miss this unique and powerful album. See ordering instructions above.
