links to 30 (!!!) Bill Shute reviews at BTC, from July 2016-May 2017

Filed under: Uncategorized — kendrasteinereditions @ 9:05 pm

Between July 2016 and May 2017, I published 30 reviews at Blog To Comm….for a while, they were coming out weekly on Tuesdays! I hope to do some more in the future, but until then, here are the links to those pieces. Some of these have “faux memoir” elements, most do not—-however, I’m told they are an informative and entertaining read, covering cultural artifacts few others would comment on. Maybe you’ll have insomnia some night and this will be just what you need….enjoy!

I composed SEVEN six-page poems during my two weeks in Natchez, Mississippi, last month, and here is the first one to be edited and formatted: GUEST REGISTER. The other six will come out gradually throughout the year, and I also hope to record all seven later this summer for 2018 release.

During my Mississippi sojourn, I was reading (once again) the lectures of Jack Spicer and also a book of essays on the poetry of Frank O’Hara—-many of the seven pieces have epigraphs from O’Hara (this one does)—-but as usual, it’s 100% me, open-field poems filtered through the consciousness of a narrative persona who is up to his waist in the muck, but looking toward the horizon (I’d say stars, but these were written during the daytime)—-JUNK SCULPTURE FROM THE NEW GILDED AGE. Natchez is a culturally rich and geographically vibrant area, and that comes out in these poems, in addition to the usual themes, which seem to be getting more strident as things continue to deteriorate here in the land of plenty.

They collected their gold though data-mining, pulling the minerals, the preferences, and the particulars from our blood, returning us an echo of the original, and selling our specifics to the highest bidder….Deputy Dawg had his forces in position by sun-up, sipping hazelnut coffee and checking their phone messages, taken for granted and passed over like a meat market to a vegan….rainwater drops, shaken loose from the canopy of foliage above the dog-trot….connected with and mapping a euthanized past, afraid to stare down the gunbarrel of today….we’d been warned to not listen to what the trees said, before they even had a chance to say it!

These seven pieces written in Natchez will eventually be collected in a full-sized professionally printed book, but as always, the home-made KSE chapbook publication is the only publication in the original formatting, with the original art, with the original epigraph (from Frank O’Hara), and in the intended form of its creation. There are only 41 copies….grab one now, while you can.

Each of these chapbooks is a stand-alone piece (the “serial poem” concept of Jack Spicer seems to fit my work well), so don’t worry about what order they are in. I consider each narrator to be a unique person telling his/her unique story from his/her unique perspective. I as poet am just the actor playing the part, the gallery-operator assembling the exhibition.

I hope you find it interesting and worthwhile. Thanks for your reading all these years!
