OVERCOME

Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal and Cynthia Etheridge

The latest entry in our poetry-photography series teams Los Angeles poet Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal with Atlanta/Asheville visual artist Cynthia Etheridge for a haunting excursion into a parallel world where the pieces of the puzzle have been put together differently and the familiar seems foreign. Luis is a poet of great range and lyricism, as can be seen in his FIVE previous KSE chapbooks and his two books, RAW MATERIALS and BEFORE & WELL AFTER MIDNIGHT. In his new OVERCOME we have a series of narrators attempting to make sense of the pieces of experience they encounter, but the skies, the roses, the fields, the dogs, and the stones do not “behave” in the expected manner, and these poetic meditations manage to be both life-affirming and puzzling and disquieting…as if Cervantes met Kafka: “We are all on our own / holding a grudge against / the world, fragile as a mirror.”

Complementing Luis’  nine poems in this suite are seven photographs by noted Southern visual artist Cynthia Etheridge, who did the front and back cover portraits for Christopher Cunningham’s IN GAMBLER’S BLOOD (KSE #69), and who is currently working out of Asheville, NC. You can see some samples of her work at her blog, http://cynthiaetheridge.blogspot.com/ . However, the b&w portraits here—-images from both the natural world and the abandoned “things” of civilization now reclaimed by that natural world—-show a new side of Cynthia’s art and were composed especially for this project. I hope to include more of Cynthia’s work in future KSE chaps.

Luis and Cynthia take you on a trip inside the otherside in this chapbook—-like all KSE offerings, small in size but potent in content and capable of multiple re-readings…now and years from now. Are we overcome or will we overcome? Read and decide…
